    email set up

    Hi

I am trying to set up email -- i have internal email - an exchange server..  depending on what i set it to (based on our smtp settings) i get different errors.. so far i have error 1 - and error 10222, and error 10022....these are immediate - it does not take a second to poll etc

to rule out our exchange server (which is working fine otherwise also w/ other applications doing this sort of thing).. i tried gmail -- my gmail email, smtp.gmail.com, smtp port 465 (as specified by gmail).  that takes a few minutes before getting an error 0.  It does not give a status of what it is doing during those minutes (ie connecting, giving username, pw etc)  (i have gmail connecting, sending and receiving fine via outlook so these settings are correct)

can i have a list of errors so i can troubleshoot what bigoven is saying to correct?  there doesnt seem to be any list in the help files.

btw - this was working in the past on previous versions of bigoven.. and my exchange server..

    thanks

    ciara

    Adieu!

    Ciara,

BigOven supports simple (i.e., pure) SMTP email only.  Google's GMail requires SSL (secure sockets layer), which BigOven does not support, nor will it in the 1.x version.  (We have it on our feature list for addition in the 2.x version.)

Are you sure it worked through MS Exchange before?  While MS Exchange can act as an SMTP server, its standard configuration requires clients to operate via MAPI (which we do not support).

One workaround is to simply select the recipes you'd like to email in the results window, choose "Copy to Clipboard" from the Edit menu, and paste into your email client before sending the email...  Another option is to post the recipe to BigOven.com, then use the "Email recipe to friend" link in the upper right corner of the webpage.

    Re: email set up

We're not prepared to announce a timeline yet for the next major upgrade to the product, sorry.  Work is progressing well on it, but for competitive reasons (and to preserve flexibility in final feature set), our policy is to not release timing details until the product is ready for beta.

(We have actually been releasing free updates to the 1.x platform as recently as about 5 weeks ago (see the changelog here).  Thanks)

    Re: email set up

For a quick simple fix that should be fairly easy to implement, since so many people are having this problem (including myself), why don't you just add an option to use MAPI in the email settings (a simple check box or radio button in the email config options would suffice, thus greying out all the other fields when selected).

Then, you can tell the program to automatically copy the currently selected recipe(s) to the body field of a new blank email of whatever email program the user has set as default (such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail, IncrediMail, etc).  You could even go so far as to have a check box for an option of whether or not to include the nutritional data in the email.

If you really want to advertise your program, you could even include a footer line at the end of the recipe with a simple link to BigOven.com!

For futher revision, you could maybe even include options such as: Insert the recipe into the email as a) Text Only, b) BigOven format, or c) HTML (which would preserve the formatting as set up in the BigOven theme file and include any photographs or other data).

    Re: email set up

    Hi Ciara,

We haven't changed anything in the way of BigOven email for the past two years -- but it's quite possible that your exchange server/ISP/IT group has changed the protocol for connecting.  BigOven only supports simple SMTP at the moment, not SSL or other protocols.  The workaround is to copy recipes to the clipboard, then paste them into your favorite email client, or simply post the recipes to the website and then send from there...
