1. Melt the shortening in a 3 or 4 quart saucepan over low heat. Let cool slightly. Add the sugar and molasses, stir and then add egg. Beat well. In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, spices and salt. Add to the molasses mixture. Mix well and chill, covered, for several hours or overnight.
2. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Form the dough into 1-inch balls. Roll in granulated sugar or vanilla sugar and place on un greased cookie sheets. Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes until they have crackled. Let cool slightly before removing to cooling racks.
