My grandma's recipe with a few tweaks of my own
Melt chocolate in boiling water/bourbon. Cool
Cream butter & sugar until fluffy.
Add yolks 1 at a time, beating well after each
Blend in vanilla & chocolate.
Sift flour w/soda & salt
Add alternatively with buttermilk to chocolate mixture, beating after each addition until smooth
Fold in beaten egg whites gently
Pour into three 9-inch layer pans lined on bottoms with paper.
Bake at 350 for 30-35 mins
Cool
Frost afterwards
This is the stock recipe. I like to use duck eggs for the cake and add an extra yolk
